All verse studiesਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ ॥ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥
Kiv sachiaaraa hoeeai kiv koorrai tuttai paal. Hukam rajaaee chalanaa Naanak likhiaa naal.
How can we become truthful, and how can the wall of falsehood between us and the Divine be broken? By walking in harmony with the Will (Hukam) of the Divine — the order written into our very being.
ਅਸੀਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਬਣੀਏ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਕੰਧ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ? ਰੱਬੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ (ਹੁਕਮ) ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕਸੁਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਚੱਲਣ ਨਾਲ — ਉਹ ਨਿਯਮ ਜੋ ਸਾਡੇ ਅਸਤਿਤਵ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਹੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥੧॥
Ghaal khaae kichh hathahu dee. Naanak raahu pachhaaneh se.
One who works for what they eat, and gives some of it away with their own hand — says Nanak, such a person recognises the true path.
ਜੋ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ — ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚਾ ਰਾਹ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨ ਤੂੰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
Man toon jot saroop hai aapanaa mool pachhaan.
O my mind, you are an embodiment of the Divine Light — recognise your own origin.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ, ਤੂੰ ਰੱਬੀ ਜੋਤ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈਂ — ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂਲ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ।
ਮਿਠਤੁ ਨੀਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗੁਣ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਤਤੁ ॥
Mithat neevee naanakaa gun changiaaeeaa tat.
Sweetness and humility are the essence of all virtues and goodness.
ਮਿਠਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਮਰਤਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆਂ ਦਾ ਤੱਤ ਹਨ।
ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਜੋ ਅਨਹੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਇਹੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੫੧॥
Chintaa taa kee keejeeai jo anahonee hoe. Ihu maarag sansaar ko naanak thir nahee koe.
Worry only about what is not meant to happen. This is the way of the world, says Nanak — nothing here is permanent.
ਚਿੰਤਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਰੋ ਜੋ ਹੋਣਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਰੀਤ ਹੈ — ਇੱਥੇ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਅਵਲਿ ਅਲਹ ਨੂਰੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਬੰਦੇ ॥ ਏਕ ਨੂਰ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਕਉਨ ਭਲੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਦੇ ॥੧॥
Aval alah noor upaaiaa kudarat ke sabh bande. Ek noor te sabh jag upajiaa kaun bhale ko mande.
First the Divine created Light; from that nature all people came. From one Light the whole world arose — so who is good, and who is bad?
ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਨੇ ਨੂਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ; ਉਸੇ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਬਣੇ। ਇੱਕ ਨੂਰ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ — ਤਾਂ ਕੌਣ ਚੰਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਮਾੜਾ?
ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਤ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੀ ॥ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
Sevaa karat hoe nihakaamee. Tis kau hot paraapat suaamee.
One who serves without desire for reward attains the Master.
ਜੋ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ॥੨॥੪੨॥੯੩॥
Teraa keeaa meethaa laagai. Har naam padaarath naanak maangai.
Whatever You do feels sweet to me. Nanak asks only for the treasure of the Divine Name.
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਬੈਰੀ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
Naa ko bairee nahee bigaanaa sagal sang ham kau ban aaee.
No one is my enemy, and no one is a stranger; I get along with everyone.
ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰਾ ਵੈਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਬੇਗਾਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ; ਮੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਹੁ ਓਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
Sachahu orai sabh ko upar sach aachaar.
Truth is higher than everything — but higher still is truthful living.
ਸੱਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ — ਪਰ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਸੱਚਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਉਣਾ।
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਬੁਰੇ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਸਾ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਹਢਾਇ ॥
Fareedaa bure daa bhalaa kar gusaa man na hadhaae.
Farid, do good even to the one who does you harm; do not let anger wear down your mind.
ਫ਼ਰੀਦ, ਜੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਭਲਾ ਕਰ; ਗੁੱਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਖੋਰਨ ਨਾ ਦੇ।
ਸਿਮਰਉ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥ ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਤਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਮਿਟਾਵਉ ॥
Simarau simar simar sukh paavau. Kal kales tan maahi mittaavau.
I remember, and keep remembering, and find peace; the strife and anguish within my body are erased.
ਮੈਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ; ਮੇਰੇ ਤਨ ਅੰਦਰਲੇ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
